Week 10 DIBLES vs Qri-5

There is a deffinate similarity between DIBLES and QRI-5. They both reflect on the building of comprehension and show where a student needs more assessment or not. It gives the option to give more assessment on DIBLES to other activities to work with to strengthen the student.QRI-5 has pieces of reading that you can assesss the student from. DIBLES gives you the power of the pen to assess the student the best way you think is needed and from that you can base your assessment from wether its low risk or not.

questions for thought(due april 26th)

    1. Which ideas from the video struck you as most relevant to your teaching of comprehension?
    2. What new instructional practices will you implement in your classroom?
    3. How will you use the ideas presented in this video to improve the comprehension of your struggling readers (students you are observing)?
a) I liked how the teacher used the elements of non-fiction layout for students to use their own minds to put the elements into their own words from the knowledge they had to pick the right elements. I also liked how the students engaged themselevs in group works to proofread each others works and show each other whats missing or needs to be taken out. Also, how they used personal knowlege to reflect on the books whether it referred to a character or something else.

b)For me it will be more difficult since I am a secondary education major, but since I am a Biology major, I would assume picture to text references will be a major role.

c) For the students I am observing I will work with the cooperating teacher and do alittle side work of informal text and background information that they have to help build their comprehension base.

Week 12 Metacognitve Assessment and Comprehension

  • How do the classroom clips illustrate Professor Duke's definition of comprehension?

  • - The classroom clips show comprehension as seen in the beginning. A little girl reads in her own words of what the book is that they are reading by using a big piece of paper stating the "elements of nonfiction". This gives the students the edge they need to want to put the words they come up with in their minds on paper by being able to better understand the words meanings.

  • Based on Professor Duke's suggestions, how can you promote active learning through your instruction?

  • - You can promote active learning through your instruction in many ways. One way, as shown in the segment, the students basically work together and proofread each others work and show where fixing is needed or what needs to be in the work.
It all starts with helping build their knowledge base.

  • How can you help your struggling readers use comprehension strategies as they read?

  • - By having them incorporate things they know such as "context clues" as shown in the video. They may not know what something is, but from looking at the words around it they can figure it out and that helps build their comprehension.

    Week 8

I believe that it is imoprtant for students to reflect on personal experiences and incorporate them into their work. Sometimes, reflecting on personal experiences and not only help you in different ways suych as weaknesses in an area, but other classmates might have similar reflections and could bring the classroom together. It will also help to expose strength and weaknesses to the instructor from things such as giving a specific time frame from class to write in a journal and talk amongst their fellow classmates

    A Writer's Story

This video clip basically depicts a teacher reaching out to his students. He tells his students about his childhood and stories of how he seemed "different" and told the students that it was okay to feel like your different and to be comfortable with who you are. He asked that the students talk about someone they know who seemed different and each student spoke out. I feel that this technique is unique, well- thought and ultimately effective. It gets each individual student involved in a classroom topic, reaches out to each student that being or feeling different from a disability whether physical or mentally to be comfortable with yourself. Also, it reaches out to other students that may not feel this way to see that other students are real people with real feeling and they might feel a little bit of respect should be given to those unfortunate students.

Question: This teacher made it a personal goal to reach his students by sharing something from his life. Do you think it will give the students more respect towards him or think differently of him for sharing this information?

    PALS summary

Linking Assessment and Instruction via Web-based Technology: A Case Study of a Statewide Early Literacy Initiative
    Summary
This article describes the technology used to support a statewide early literacy initiative in Virginia. It talks about how teachers use top of the line technology to use the World Wide Web to record information from early literacy assessments to make a plan or agenda to teach further instruction using PALS( Phonological Assessment Literacy Screening). PALS is a tool that identifies kindergarten through third grade students in need of additional instruction. It allows teachers to follow students throughout the years and it tracks students progress in phonological awareness, alphabet recognition, letter sounds, invented spelling and concept of word development. This program is a fantastic tool that is going to become a mandatory necessity to teachers worldwide.  The program is as simple as it can get to be an effective teacher by literally listing where a given student needs help and what to teach next. It allows you to be able to section the class into readiness level, preprimer, primer and then onto first through third. To be able to categorize students like this is beneficial to both parties. You as a teacher get to be able to be effective in your job while not being too strenuous and time consuming, while the student gets to be able to get the proper information to be able to move onto the next level. If only this type of technology was around 20 years ago, teaching today would have a whole different aspect to it. Although I’m a secondary school teacher candidate, I would’ve used it if I was teaching younger students.

    video assessment

In the video, it emphasizes the importance of effective classroom assessment. It also talks about the importance of meeting the needs of all students in an order of having workshop participants make a seperate schedule but simmilar to the lesson in a way the students will understand. I have observed a class that was just like this 2 years ago. It was a First grade class and had 2 students with IEP's and a teachers assistant to help out who worked with those two students in a matter that helped them but at the same time didnt distract the class or frustrate the 2 students as if someone was watching over their shoulder. Those two students went on to keep grades higher and that is a important aspect of teaching

  • you dont seclude the student at all. either work one on one with them or have them pair with someone close to their level
-reach out to the family by having them try games or something to incorportate learning and to make it fun
